چکیده
This article describes electrical and pharmacologic cardioversion for atrial fibrillation and discusses indications for cardioversion and management of pericardioversion anticoagulation. Finally, management strategies are offered for immediate recurrence of atrial fibrillation and cardioversion failure.

drug therapy, but not so after adjustment for left ventricular ejection fraction, left atrial diameter or duration of atrial fibrillation. We feel that our results justify the conclusion that “patients who undergo electrical cardioversion display a greater degree and longer duration of mechanical atrial dysfunction than those who convert pharmacologically or spontaneously” (1). We agree with Fa...
متن کاملClinical variables affecting recovery of left atrial mechanical function after cardioversion from atrial fibrillation.
OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate the effect of clinical factors on recovery of atrial function after cardioversion for atrial fibrillation. BACKGROUND Lack of effective mechanical atrial function (EMAF) after cardioversion of atrial fibrillation predisposes to thromboembolic complications and delays improvement in functional capacity. METHODS Fifty-two patients underwent cardioversion (grou...

Introduction: Most current evidence suggests the risk of left atrial and or auricular thrombi(LA &LAA) in patients with atrial flutter rhythm is similar to patients with atrial fibrillation, but there is still uncertainty in the risk level and the patient's need to receive anticoagulant therapy. Different studies report various frequencies for atrial thrombi and left atrial spontaneous echo-con...
متن کاملEfficacy, safety, and determinants of conversion of atrial fibrillation and flutter with oral amiodarone.
Amiodarone is effective for long-term maintenance of sinus rhythm after electrical cardioversion of refractory atrial fibrillation or flutter. To examine its efficacy and safety for pharmacologic conversion of these arrhythmias, we studied 129 patients with refractory atrial fibrillation or flutter who had failed previous intensive conventional antiarrhythmic treatment. In anticipation of elect...

PURPOSE This review summarizes the available evidence regarding the efficacy of medications used for ventricular rate control, stroke prevention, acute conversion, and maintenance of sinus rhythm, as well as the efficacy of electrical cardioversion and the use of echocardiography in patients with atrial fibrillation. DATA SOURCES The Cochrane Collaboration's database of controlled clinical tr...
